How to Build a Simple Pre-Wash Routine

How to Build a Simple Pre-Wash Routine

Part of our Hair Oiling Guide: Read Now

A pre-wash oiling routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a straightforward, step-by-step guide you can follow:

  • Choose Your Oil:

Select a nourishing hair oil. It could be a single natural oil or a blend. (For example, SVAAN’s Golden Amara Hair Oil is already a blend of 15 botanical oils tailored for all hair types.) Match the oil to your needs (coconut/avocado for dryness, argan/jojoba for fine hair, etc.). Use a pure, cold-pressed or gentle-processed oil for best results.

  • Prep Your Hair and Oil:

Start with dry, detangled hair. If you like, slightly warm the oil by placing the bottle in hot water for a couple of minutes – this helps the oil spread smoothly. Section your hair so you can apply the oil evenly.

    • Apply and Massage:

Using your fingertips, apply the oil starting at the scalp and working down to the ends. A good tip is to spend 5–10 minutes massaging the scalp in gentle circular motions. This not only helps the oil penetrate but also increases blood flow to your scalp. Make sure all strands get some oil, but avoid using so much that it drips everywhere – a little goes a long way.

    • Let It Sit:

After oiling, let the treatment work. You can leave the oil in for at least 30 minutes (up to 1 hour). For an even deeper treatment, wrap your hair in a warm towel or put on a shower cap; the warmth helps the oil absorb better. If time allows, many people even oil their hair overnight for intensive conditioning, then shampoo in the morning.

    1. Shampoo and Rinse:

When you’re ready, rinse out the oil with a gentle shampoo. You might need to shampoo twice to fully remove the oil, especially if you used a heavy one. Then follow with conditioner if you normally do. Your hair should feel softer from the start. We recommend using a sulfate-free shampoo for this.
    2. Repeat Weekly:

Incorporate this into your routine 1–2 times a week. Consistency is key. Even doing it once a week can yield softer, stronger hair over time. Notice how your hair responds and adjust frequency as needed.

Over time, this small ritual becomes an easy part of your hair care. As noted above, properly done pre-wash oiling “leaves hair feeling softer and easier to manage”. It’s also a nice self-care break – a chance to sit with a hair mask of natural oils while you relax!

Incorporate Golden Amara

To make your routine even simpler, try Golden Amara Hair Oil. Because it’s already a blend, you don’t have to measure or mix oils yourself. Here’s why it fits easily into this routine:

  • Lightweight and Non-Sticky:

Golden Amara is formulated to be non-greasy. That means it spreads easily on dry hair and isn’t too heavy to wash out.
  • Nutrient-Rich:

It’s made with 15 botanical oils and double-boiled to preserve potency. All you need is a few drops to coat your hair.

  • Clean Formula:

It’s free of harsh chemicals (no sulfates, parabens or mineral oils), so it treats hair gently.

In practice, just pour a small amount of oil into your hands and work it into hair following the steps above. You’ll likely notice that even though Golden Amara is lightweight, it still gives your hair that nourished, glossy feeling. In short, it’s a convenient way to add pre-shampoo care into your weekly routine without extra hassle.
