Choosing the Right Pre-Wash Hair Oil

Part of our Hair Oiling Guide: Read Now
Not all oils work the same for every hair type. To find the right pre-wash oil, consider your hair texture, scalp condition and personal needs.
Hair Texture and Thickness
If your hair is dry, coarse or curly:
Richer oils tend to work best. Coconut oil, castor oil and avocado oil can deeply condition and soften the strands. These are ideal for hair that feels rough or brittle.
If your hair is fine or tends to get greasy:
Go for lighter oils like jojoba, grapeseed or sweet almond. These help maintain hydration without leaving a heavy or sticky feel. If you have normal or combination hair, versatile oils like argan or almond offer balanced moisture and softness.
Scalp and Hair Concerns
Choose an oil that matches your biggest concerns. If you struggle with breakage or rough ends, oils rich in nutrients such as coconut or macadamia can support strand strength. If frizz is your main issue, argan or moringa oil are helpful for smoothing the outer layer of the hair.
For scalp dryness or itchiness, try blends that include calming oils like olive, rosemary or a hint of tea tree. Many oils also add shine and hydration. While their core function is similar, how they interact with your hair can vary by one or two key properties.
How Oils Behave
Some oils penetrate deeper into the strand, while others coat the surface to protect it. For example, coconut oil is known for its ability to reduce protein loss by reaching into the hair shaft. Argan oil smooths the outer layer and locks in moisture. Many modern blends combine different oils to balance these effects.
Quality and Formulation
Look for oils that are not excessively heated and free from fillers. Unrefined oils keep more of their nutrients intact. Always check the ingredients list and avoid options with synthetic fragrances, silicones or mineral oil. But, silicones are not always bad for your hair if the formulation is rightly prepared by professionals.
Golden Amara is an example of a clean blend, made without sulfates, parabens or mineral oil. It is also double-boiled to preserve nutrients. A clean formula like this is gentler on both the scalp and strands, especially with regular use.
Feel and Application
Ease of use matters too. Some traditional oils, like castor or mustard oil, can feel sticky and be hard to rinse out. If you're just starting a pre-wash routine, go for something light and easy to apply. A product like Golden Amara is made for daily convenience. It feels weightless, spreads smoothly and washes off easily with shampoo.
How to Know If It Works
The best way to choose is by trying. Apply a small amount of oil on dry hair and see how it feels after washing. If your scalp feels greasy or your hair looks limp, try a lighter oil or reduce the quantity. If your hair still feels dry, you may need a richer blend.
